What happened when the AI was asked
On September 6, 2026, Google's map for "plumber portland" showed D&F Plumbing, Perfect Service Plumbing, and Henco Plumbing Services, on 2,200, 267, and 927 reviews. The same day, I asked ChatGPT "who is the best plumber in Portland." It named Service Plus Plumbing.
Its reasons: 5.0 on Google from 933 reviews, 4.8 on Yelp, 4.9 on Angi, BBB A+ accreditation with no registered complaints, and a service list it read off the BBB page. Its sources were Yahoo Local, BBB, and Angi. Then the caveat: Service Plus is closed on weekends, so for a true after-hours emergency it recommended Pro Drain, Cornel's, or another 24-hour provider.
Three plumbers hold the map. The AI named a fourth, and then routed the most valuable kind of call, the emergency, to a fifth and sixth. That is the whole case for GEO in one answer. It is the GEO half of my SEO, GEO, and AEO services for trades.

What GEO means for a plumber
Generative engine optimization is the work of being the business an AI names when someone asks it for a plumber. It is built from records other people keep, facts that agree across them, and pages on your site that say plainly what you do and when. Those are the five inputs every trade shares.
For plumbing it has one feature the other trades do not have to the same degree: emergencies. A large share of plumbing calls are urgent, and the answer above shows the engine reading hours and acting on them. A plumber who answers at night and does not say so on every listing is invisible for exactly the calls that pay the most. Heating companies face the same midnight call in October.

The plumbing-specific steps
The general checklist is in the post on getting ChatGPT to recommend your business. These are the parts that matter more for a plumber.

- Hours, everywhere, in the same words. If you take emergency calls, "Open 24 hours" has to appear on the Google profile, Yelp, Angi, BBB, Yahoo Local, and your site. The engine read the hours and changed its recommendation. It will do the same for you, in either direction.
- An emergency page with facts on it. Response time, the after-hours number, what counts as an emergency, the areas you cover at night, and what the call-out costs. "Emergency plumber portland" is 400 searches a month with a $50 click, and the AI reads the same page Google ranks.
- A page per service. Drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer lines, repiping, leak detection. Each with the process, the timeline, a price range, and the questions people ask. "Drain cleaning portland" is 800 a month at a difficulty of zero, and almost nobody has a real page for it.
- The records the answer cited. A BBB profile with the service list filled in, because the AI read the services off it. Claimed Yelp and Angi. A Yahoo Local listing, which the answer cited first and most plumbers have never checked. The Oregon CCB record current and under the right business name.
- Reviews that mention the job. Ask after every completed call, at the hour people respond, and ask for specifics: "fixed the water heater in Sellwood on a Sunday" is a sentence an engine can use. Henco's 927 reviews are the habit, not the luck.
- A page per city. Gresham, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Vancouver. "Plumber gresham" is 200 searches a month at a difficulty of zero because nobody has written the page, and the AI, asked for a plumber in Gresham, has nothing to find.
How to check it
Ten prompts a Portland homeowner would ask, run monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Mode from a signed-out browser. The captures on this site so far are from ChatGPT. For plumbing, make sure the list includes an emergency prompt, a weekend prompt, a water heater prompt, and one for each city you work in. Record who was named and what was cited. The cited column is your work order. The free consultation runs the plumbing prompts for your city and hands you that column.

Frequently asked questions
- What is GEO for plumbers?
- Generative engine optimization for a plumbing company: the work of being the plumber an AI names when someone asks it for one. It is built from third-party records, facts that agree everywhere, and specific service, emergency, and area pages on your site.
- Why did ChatGPT name a plumber that is not on Google's map?
- Because it does not read the map. It named the plumber it could verify from Yahoo Local, BBB, and Angi, with high ratings on several platforms that agreed, and a BBB service list it could quote. Map position was not among its reasons.
- Do hours really affect whether the AI recommends me?
- Yes. In the Portland answer the AI noted that its first pick closes on weekends and recommended 24-hour providers for emergencies instead. Hours have to be correct and identical on every listing, and an emergency page should say what you cover at night.
- How long does GEO take for a plumber?
- Most results show after three to six months, the same as the rest of the search work. The records the AI reads update on their own schedules, and I measure monthly with a fixed prompt list so the movement is visible before the calls are.
